We saw her briefly in the second season finale — now here's our first clear shot of actress Danai Gurira as katana-swinging wasteland warrior Michonne from The Walking Dead's third season (via Entertainment Weekly). As Walking Dead head honcho Robert Kirkman explains:

The essence of the character - her personality, her motives, everything that makes Michonne Michonne - remains intact from the comics [...] but like a lot of things on the show, there will be little tweaks and differences here and there. We saw that her introduction is slightly different from how it was in the comic, and her interaction with Andrea is really going to be a really cool addition to the character that I think will get television viewers up to speed, and they'll get to know her a lot faster than comic book readers did.

What's the practicality of a katana in a zombie apocalypse? Beside the fact that it looks cool.

Sure, it's great if you can stop your enemy by gutting them or cutting off a limb, but that doesnt help you in a ZA and even decapitating them isnt going to kill them.

You'd likely much rather have a close quarter weapon that was a bit smaller and could puncture a skull with a straight jab like a bayonet.
