Would-Be Captain Americas Do Screen Tests... But Seriously? John Krasinski?

A list of the actors screen-testing to play Captain America has leaked. The list contains a few familiar faces and some unknowns, but the biggest surprise is John Krasinski. What the Hell?

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about a batch of possible Captain Americas. Honestly there are a few potentials here, but this whole John Krasinski thing is nonsense. He must have been auditioning for the Flash and mixed up his room numbers. According to the trade, here's the names off the test list:

Those known to be on the list with [John] Krasinski include Michael Cassidy (who appeared in"Smallvile" and who tested for the Superman movie when McG was going to direct it), Patrick Flueger (one of the stars of "The 4400" who most recently appeared in the Tobey Maguire movie "Brothers"), Scott Porter (TV's "Friday Night Lights"), Wilson Bethel ("Generation Kill") and Mike Vogel ("Cloverfield").

Chace Crawford is also in talks to screen test, though no deal has been made.

Here's our breakdown of this bit of testing news:

John Krasinski

Sure, we think he's lovely. But there isn't one thing about this actor that says "rugged." Plus he's too familiar, he would invoke the "Ted Danson Effect." You remember watching Saving Private Ryan, and out of nowhere strolls Ted Danson. People started yelling Cheers! from the back row. Krasinski is too familiar, so audiences aren't going to buy him as a citizen with superpowers. He's Jim to the rest of America, or at most he can play the sweet boyfriend in a romantic comedy. Should he be given a chance to break out of this mold? You bet. But not as Captain America.

Scott Porter

The best of the lot is Scott Porter, or as you may know him "Street" from Friday Night Lights. This boy is the definition of corn-fed. Look at him here doing all this American crap, delightful. Plus he sold his ridiculously cliched character in Lights hard. And he's great as the youngest husband in a group marriage, in Caprica.

Patrick Flueger

We liked him the 4400, and he's probably aged a lot more since then, and he seriously impressed in the super dramatic war film, Brothers. He's got potential, and chops.

Mike Vogel

The older, "sexier" brother from Cloverfield. We really would like to see Vogel in more things before saying he's Cap material. But at least he's got the chin, and he's not recognizable enough to throw people off.

Michael Cassidy

He played Grant in Smallville, apart from that, we know nothing else about this actor.

Wilson Bethel

We have yet to see Bethel in anything. He has a seemingly steady gig on the The Young and the Restless, but can he hold up a major tentpole production? That remains to be seen.

Chace Crawford

And finally, Crawford. Are you fucking kidding me? Hell, why not the oldest Jonas brother? I hear he's shaving now. Shame on you, Hollywood. This is all that really needs to be said about this idea.
