Holy hell, a whole lot of star power just signed on to make Warner Bros. Suicide Squad movie. Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are all lining up to play bad guys forced to be good.
Warner Bros. just announced [via press release] that Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are officially set to star in Suicide Squad. Which, wow, that's a list of really big names. The premise behind this comic-to-movie adaptation is simple: the "squad" is a collection of ever-changing incarcerated big bads who are looking to shrink their sentences by running black ops suicide missions for the good guys. Basically, they have to do dangerous and deadly acts to get out of trouble.
And here's the villainous lineup: the Joker will be played by Jared Leto; Deadshot will be Will Smith; Harley Quinn is Margot Robbie; Boomerang is Jai Courtney; Enchantress is Cara Delevingne, and Tom Hardy is Rick Flagg.
David Ayer (Fury) is both writing the script and directing.
Warner Bros. President, Greg Silverman released this statement about the future film:
We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer's amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero."
UPDATE: Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is still circling around looking for an actor for the Amanda Waller role. But rumor has it Oprah Winfrey is their top pic. However the studio is also interested in Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer. The report also suggests that Warner Bros. is looking at Suicide Squad as the Ocean's Eleven of superhero flicks. And that doesn't sound bad at all.
Suicide Squad has a release date of Aug. 5, 2016.
