Anchorman director Adam McKay is already running down his shortlist of actor hopefuls for his live-adaptation of the ultra-violent comic The Boys. Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic follows a superpowered CIA group charged with keeping idiotic superheroes in line.

In an interview with MTV McKay revealed that he had high hopes for Russell Crowe to play the leader of the boys, Billy Butcher. In fact, the two have already had a meeting. Butcher is an excessively violent character who seriously despises superheroes (and takes delight in killing them).

We think this could be a great character for Crowe, we're dying to see him in something edgy again. But we're not getting our hopes up just yet. McKay admitted that he still hasn't finished writing the script

"I'm writing completely on my own on that, so it's taking twice as long as it should. I am actually in the home stretch. I have about two weeks left on this draft and we're going to try and get it made. It's looking pretty cool. I'm excited about it...You really have to wait until the draft is done to get serious about it, plus it's like a $100 million, Rated-R, anti-superhero movie, so we have to see who bites on it."

And that is a pretty hard sell. Still, we think this could be a spectacularly dark and hilarious film.

I'm old enough that I remember when Russell Crowe was a really fantastic actor.
