Why you should feel bad for the Internet-created monster Slender Man (or run screaming in terror)

Slender Man is what happens when the Internet gets involved in the folklore business. Created on a sunny June day in the Something Awful forums, Slender Man started as a couple of creepy photoshopped images and evolved into a full-blown monster meme about a paranormal creature with a blank face, dark suit, and tentacle-like arms. Animation Domination High Def created this sweet ditty, "Sympathy for the Slender Man," explaining that the Internet legend just wants to be your friend.

Oh wait, no he doesn't. This is all a horrifying ruse. Don't click that video. And if you do click that video, don't watch through to the end—at least not if you want to avoid tender Slender Man nightmares.

ha! I love it. I'm also in love with the idea that the internet came up with a mythological monster and people buy into it. Most i'm sure are aware that it's made up and so on, but there are those who i've run into who honestly thought it pre-dated the internet (which i think some of the inspiration for Slenderman could be used to argue that it DOES pre-date it) and thought it was real. It's a great exercise in how folks will believe anything they read on the net.
