This isn’t official or anything, and let’s hope that something gets worked out, but sources have told The Wrap that Channing Tatum is in the process of walking away from Gambit.
There aren’t any major details yet, all The Wrap says is that Tatum and the studio are in negotiations to keep him. It could all work out — just a few weeks ago Tatum was promoting this project at Comic-Con. He’s been excited about it forever and it has a release date of October 6, 2016.
Tatum is even producing the movie, which makes his sudden desire to walk away really weird. Tatum did recently talk about how much he hated being pigeonholed after G.I. Joe, maybe some other offer’s come up that he wants more than Gambit. But, again, he’s been pushing for it for so long, it’s shocking that he’d suddenly get cold feet. Plus, if he walks that might mean that his producing partners leave with him, leaving the whole movie to be reworked under Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.
Hopefully this is just a speed bump. Even if it isn’t we’re probably not going to get the whole story at all.
