Via National Geographic comes this at-a-glance visualization of surnames across America.

Unlike this interactive name-map of London, which is COVERED with Johnsons, Bennetts, Begums and Patels, Nat Geo's applet reveals an American landscape heavily populated by Smiths, Sullivans and Browns. (And– to be fair – like London, plenty of Johnsons.) Like the London map, names that pop up more frequently in a given region appear larger.

Notice also the geographic distribution of surnames according to their country origin (denoted by a name's color) – the preponderance of names with Spanish origins in Southern California, for instance, or Scandanavian ones in and around Minnesota.

Check it out for yourself over at NatGeo.
