Teletubbies meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon this is not. The trailer you see here is for a film called Monster Hunt, directed Raman Hui, a main animator on the Shrek films. That film, which was released earlier this July in China, has very quickly become the highest grossing film in Chinese history.
I mean, what can you say about that trailer? It has men giving birth to monsters, men nursing monsters, monsters who are destined to be kings, wire-fu action and more. It looks absolutely crazy and the fact it currently doesn’t have a U.S. release date is a damn shame. The over $210 million it’s grossed internationally may help that.
As for the actual story, here’s a snippet:
In a fantasy world far, far away, monsters ruled the land. Then came human’s all-out war in an attempt to seize the land. In its final days, they outwitted the monsters and succeeded in driving them into the dark mountains. Ever since, monsters were forbidden to step into the land again. If they were found, they would be captured and exterminated. For all these years, the two races have lived in their separate worlds, until the birth of a new monster king who would reshape the balance of power and bring in the new world order.
Here’s a poster too.
Safe to say, Monster Hunt is now officially on our radars. It’s the Chinese Avatar.
