Book of Life director Jorge Gutierrez wowed us with his stunning visuals and his portrayal of the Mexican Day of the Dead. And it's clear from his student Emmy-award-winning short film that he's been playing with these designs and themes for a while.

Gutierrez made Carmelo as his CalArts thesis film in 2000. And even though this short is 14 years old, we can see how much of Carmelo eventually made its way into Book of Life. Carmelo is a more sorrowful film, however, one that focuses on the big dreams of a little boy and the way his parents honor that dream, even after his death.
