Watch Captains Kirk and Picard soar to the edges of space for the first time

Back in April, we told you about a Kickstarter project designed to send Starship Captains Kirk and Picard on their first real-life trip to space. Conceived by space enthusiast Logan Kugler, the project aimed to lift action figures of the two captains (and a few lucky crew members) to an altitude of over 100,000 feet, in one of the most ambitious high-altitude balloon launches in history. Last month, that project was realized.

Featured here is some of the first raw footage of the launch, provided courtesy of Kugler, along with a seven-minute segment from the Discovery Channel documenting the launch and recovery of the balloon in Champaign, Illinois. According to Kugler, a final video of the entire flight is currently being edited by Max Schlickenmeyer, who is also responsible for this awesome video, titled The Most Astounding Fact, featuring voiceover by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Kugler tells io9 that it was a fantastic launch, and that he's already working hard on a big follow-up to this project. We can't wait to see what he has in store for us.

...and then the balloon popped and I saw the Enterprise D go into an uncontrolled fall from orbit, and it was the trauma from Generations ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

They'll build an E...they'll build an E...they'll build an E...they'll build an E...
