Both DC and Marvel's company-wide crossovers, Secret Wars and Convergence, look to mine the respective pasts of their superhero universes. But Valiant is getting in on the event business with a scenario that looks into the future of its characters — a future that seems to have plenty of death in store.

Book of Death, a four-part monthly series written by Robert Venditti, and drawn by Robert Gill and Doug Braithwaite, will follow a young girl known as the Geomancer and her guardian the Eternal Warrior, as the heroes and villains go to war to get their hands on her. Why do they want her? She knows about events that will happen in the far future, and the fates (and deaths) that are in store for the likes of Ninjak, X-O Manowar and more. Here's a description from Valiant's press release:

Colliding the next two thousand years of history against the most powerful heroes of today, the story launches in July as a new Geomancer emerges (spinning out of the events of The Valiant) to build a bridge to the future of the Valiant Universe.

The Valiant heroes. X-O Manowar. Bloodshot. Ninjak. The Harbinger Renegades. Unity. This is how they lived. This is how they died.

Now we know. The Book of the Geomancer has recorded it all. But only a young girl – the last in a line of the enigmatic mystics who protect the Earth known as Geomancers – has seen this future come to pass, from the coming cataclysm to the dawn of the 41st century. Alone with her sworn protector, the Eternal Warrior – a soldier battle-forged across five thousand years of combat – the duo must defy their allies to stop the Dark Age that now threatens to eclipse our world.

Outside of the event, each issue will be accompanied by the release a single one-shot, each depicting the fall from grace of a character from the Valiant Universe: The Fall of Bloodshot, The Fall of Ninjak, The Fall of Harbinger and The Fall of X-O Manowar. It's kind of nice to have a comic event that's not putting out a billion tie-in books, to be honest.

Judging by all the bodies and the rather ominous figure of death, it doesn't look like the future's a particularly great place for the Valiant Universe.

Book of Death kicks off in July.
