Two sisters must cope with an alien invasion—and each other

Anyone who thinks comics aren't for kids or for ladies hasn't read Dani Jones' webcomic My Sister, the Freak. It stars a pair of sisters who seem like they couldn't be more different from one another, but discover they're Earth's best hope against an alien invasion.

Everyone thinks that Allison Seaver's little sister Mary is kind of a freak. She's a hyperactive kid with a wild imagination who is trying to be the craziest flying monkey in the school's production of The Wizard of Oz while Allison is just trying to survive her English class. One night, Mary has an alien encounter and won't stop talking about it, much to Allison's chagrin. But when aliens start popping up more and more—and at rather inconvenient times—the sisters uncover some surprises about their world, and themselves. And as the cast of aliens grows, Mary and Allison will have to learn more about each other and their own strengths.

Jones is a children's book illustrator (be sure to check out her adorable illustrations for MONSTERS Vs. KITTENS), and My Sister, the Freak has a definite children's book quality in its artwork. It's an excellent match for the warm quality of the comic. As filled as the comic is with tentacle monsters and goofy alien critters, at its heart it's about two girls who love each other very much, even if they don't always get along. It's clear that Allison and Mary will have to work together as a team if they hope to keep their corner of the world safe, even if each one kind of thinks the other is a freak.

Dani Jones is a great artist and storyteller, and by all accounts a nice lady. I was following her blog a few years back because she has some nice art tutorials on there.

In 2008, she hosted a contest for submitting art tutorials to her website. She awarded me First Place for my video tutorial, and I won an awesome prize package. Good to see her get attention on io9!
