Wish that NBC's alternate history Kings hadn't been canceled? Starz may have come up with the next best thing: A contemporary retelling of the King Arthur legend, written by Torchwood's former showrunner.
The cable channel announced Camelot this morning, a new series that aims to do for the Camelot story what Kings did for King David, written by Chris Chibnall. The international production - America's Starz is co-funding with companies from the UK, Ireland and Canada - is being described as a "romantic adventure" and ushered into existence by Blood Diamond and Edge of Darkness producer Graham King and Morgan O'Sullivan and Michael Hirst, executive producers of Showtime's The Tudors. The project may feel like vindication for Chibnall, who worked on an early, unmade, version of BBC's Merlin before becoming head writer for Torchwood.
The 10-episode series is expected to go into production this summer for an early 2011 premiere.
