Tons of dancing robots in the trailer for India's Terminator

We've been excited for Endhiran, aka Robot, for years now, and India's big-budget robot adventure is finally coming out in about a month. This new trailer features dancing robots, Terminator shout-outs, and crazy action set pieces.

Check out this amazing trailer. Sorry it's so small, but you can click the "full screen" thing and it looks pretty good. I've only watched it about a dozen times.

S. Shankar's Endhiran, which is a Kollywood movie (not a Bollywood film, as we erroneously stated in the past — it's the product of the Tamil film industry, based out of Chennai), features the splashy dance routines you'd expect from Indian films. (And the soundtrack is already on the top of the iTunes chart!)

But it also features a fairly intricate plot, in which a guy creates a robot as a companion for his son — and, depending on which synopsis you read, the robot either goes on a killing rampage, or evildoers try to seize control of the robot. One way or the other, the robot may be turning on its creator. Superstar Rajnikanth plays both the robot and its creator. The love interest is played by Aishwarya Rai, who's been photographed dancing with ostriches in a giant set piece.

After the disappointment of Love Story 2050, which bombed and was regarded as somewhat lifeless, here's hoping Endhiran can rekindle interest in science fiction among Indian audiences. Among the people who's got to be hoping this is true is Shahrukh Khan (often called SRK), who was originally slated to star in Endhiran but abandoned the film to star in Ra.One, a superhero film he's producing himself. Ra.One features Hollywood special effects creators and a plot reminiscent of Spider-Man, about a guy who can "solidify electricity."

Here are a couple more trailers for Endhiran. I love the dancing hair in the first one:
