Great comedian and all-around amazing producer and writer Tina Fey is making a Hocus Pocus sequel. And if it has to be anyone, we're so glad it's her. However, we're not super excited about the premise... Updated with new info!
A long time ago, there were whispers that Disney wanted to make a sequel to Hocus Pocus, but with actresses like Melissa McCarthy and Tina Fey. Well, apparently the pitch was good, because The Tracking Board is reporting that Tina Fey has signed on to produce this picture with her production company Little Stranger. This is no guarantee that she will star in the sequel, but it's a good step forward.
What will the picture actually be about? TB also has an oddly jumbled plot synopsis for the potential feature:
The sequel will pick up years after the original, focusing on a housewife who is related to the Sanderson sisters, who teams up with a witch hunter to save her children after they run afoul of some resurrected witches while out trick-or-treating.
Ugh, a "witch hunter?" not sure I like the sound of that. Also, the adults are the main characters? Not sure I like the sound of that either. The whole allure of the first movie (besides the amazing trio that was Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) was the kids versus crazy magical adults premise. It's that Goonies/E.T. thing where the children are allowed to be the heroes, not the adults. And the parents are kind of aloof morons cursed to dance for eternity. It's great.
That being said, in Tina Fey I trust. And I will remain cautiously optimistic about this project because maybe, just maybe, that will mean Bette Midler could resurrect her role (even if only for a cameo). But again, not a single actor is attached to this movie yet.
UPDATE: Deadline is reporting that this witch film is completely separate of the Hocus Pocus film entirely. Which I think is better with that plot they have. However I can see how this film may have been a jumping off point for discussion about future live action Halloween-type films. But no official confirmation either way.
