Syfy has tapped Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter director Timur Bekmambetov to create an action-fantasy "reimagining" of The Wizard of Oz. The miniseries will be called Warriors of Oz and it sounds completely fucking insane.

Deadline describes it thusly:

It is a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story in which a warrior from present day Earth is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land.

Wha...? "Post-apocalyptic future Oz"? Hey, Dorothy, or whoever the hell is going to be "reimagined" into the role: I don't want to tell you your job or anything, but if you want to fight an evil wizard, you might want to look for better fighting companions than dudes named "Brainless" and "Coward." That Heartless guy sounds pretty useful, though.

At the moment, Bekmambetov is only set to executive produce, but he could direct it as well.

So one of the few stories specifically written to feature a female heroine because of the abundance of stories featuring male heroes will now have that heroine replaced with some warrior dude?

Even my enjoyment for Bekmambetov cannot get my butt in the seat for that bullhonkey appropriative sexist malarky.
