No, you didn’t drop acid and start playing Super Mario Bros. That’s just the unique, beautiful aesthetic of Boy and the World, a new animated film which hits theaters on December 11. We’ve got an exclusive clip—a clip that undoubtedly feels like the most amazing side-scrolling video game you will never play.
In the film, directed by Alê Abreu, a young boy has to go on a journey to reunite his family. Along the way, he finds himself in a plethora of jaw-dropping settings that act as almost a microcosm of the relationship between the natural and industrial world, all set to Brazilian samba and hip hop. It’s a wholly different film that has won awards at over 40 different film festivals.
It’s also one of the films eligible for the 2016 Best Animated Film Academy Award, alongside heavy hitters like Inside Out, Anomalisa, The Peanuts Movie and When Marnie Was There.
Boy and the World, released by GKids, opens December 11. Get more info here.
