The Yip Yips From Mars Will Haunt Your Nightmares

There was nothing more frightening to me, as a child, than the soul sucking gaping faces of the Yip Yips. Of all the weird media moments in my youth, these Sesame Street aliens take the creepy-holy-mother-of-god-get-out-of-my-head cake. Their evil vacuous mouths graced TV screens everywhere in 1971 in this telephone sketch. I dare you to watch one of the clips after the jump and not feel incredibly uncomfortable or creeped out.

Especially when they start moving their mouths back and forth.

I loved these guys as a kid too. Never felt that they were scary. When I was in the Navy, I shot around an idea with my friends of shooting a short Tom Clancy'esq movie clip involving these guys. I imagined sitting in Combat, red lights and all, building up suspense with the discovery of an unknown radar contact. Wanted to have these guys just come out of the corners and start their ridiculous "yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, ah-huh, ah-huh". Comedy.
