Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The narration in the latest trailer has been a topic of debate — the lines spoken by Luke Skywalker are taken from a speech he gives to Leia in Return of the Jedi, but it was difficult to tell if the dialogue was lifted directly, or a new narration from The Force Awakens.

Speaking at Celebration over the weekend, Mark Hamill and JJ Abrams confirmed that the narration was actually a bit of both — Hamill recorded the lines again the week before the trailer was released, and the new recording was added to the original as reverb. This means it was likely that the dialogue was just for the purpose of the trailer, rather than having any specific part in the new movie. [ Business Insider]

Avengers: Age Of Ultron/Ant-Man

In an extensive interview with Buzzfeed, Joss Whedon discussed the process of creating his last movie with Marvel (for now). Here he is on the scope of Age of Ultron:

“What was that again about making the Avengers sequel smaller? “That has not gone my way,” Whedon said with a laugh en route home from the set in July. “I totes failed to make it smaller. There is a lot of movie.”

Both Whedon and Feige insist, however, that the precipitously expanding scope of Age of Ultron was never by design. “The truth is, whether anybody will ever believe it or not, we never sat down — we being Joss and I and the team at Marvel — and said, ‘How do we make it even bigger?!’” Feige said on set. “It always was, ‘Where do we want to take the characters?’ That’s the way Joss thinks.”

And here he is on Marvel’s decision to part ways with Edgar Wright on Ant-Man:

When asked six weeks later if he had anything else to say about Wright’s departure, at first Whedon replied, “No.” And then he kept talking.

“Only that I don’t get it,” he said with a sigh. “I thought the script was not only the best script that Marvel had ever had, but the most Marvel script I’d read. I had no interest in Ant-Man. [Then] I read the script, and was like, Of course! This is so good! It reminded me of the books when I read them. Irreverent and funny and could make what was small large, and vice versa. I don’t know where things went wrong. But I was very sad. Because I thought, This is a no-brainer. This is Marvel getting it exactly right. Whatever dissonance that came, whatever it was, I don’t understand why it was bigger than a marriage that seemed so right. But I’m not going to say it was definitely all Marvel, or Edgar’s gone mad! I felt like they would complement each other by the ways that they were different. And, uh, somethin’ happened.”

Ms. Marvel

A rumor based on a since deleted Reddit post (so find your finest grain of salt to take with this one) has claimed that the new Marvel TV project by John Ridley will not be the Agents of SHIELD spinoff purportedly led by Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood, but a miniseries based on the Kamala Khan incarnation of Ms. Marvel.

To get around the fact that Khan’s version of the character very much relies on the established existence of Captain Marvel (for those unfamiliar with the comics, after gaining her Inhuman powers Kamala took on the Ms. Marvel mantle as she was a huge fan of Carol Danvers, who had put aside being Ms. Marvel to become Captain Marvel), the show will allegedly build up to her becoming Ms. Marvel over the course of the series, Daredevil-style. The post concluded by adding that the show would be formally announced, alongside the SHIELD spinoff and renewals for both SHIELD and Agent Carter.

As always with unsourced rumors, take this all with a pinch of salt. [ Comics Alliance]

Arrow/Flash Spinoff

The Originals

Michael Narducci talks about the reasons behind killing off Aidan:

We knew off the bat we wanted to tell a beautiful Romeo and Juliet story between Josh, a vampire, and [Aidan], a werewolf. Our goal was to create a complicated, layered person who was put in many dilemmas in terms of his loyalty to the pack. Being an ambitious person and questioning the leadership of his own friend led him to be vulnerable to Klaus. [Then], Dahlia comes to town and her goal is to divide the Mikaelsons and ruin the vow of “always and forever” so that they would be easier to take down. We thought, “If Dahlia is smart, she could use someone’s death the way she says she’s going to use Aidan’s death as the kindling to light a fire that divides the Mikaelsons.” ... Everyone of us loves Aidan and everyone of us is sad to see Collin Woodell go because he’s such an incredible actor and a beautiful performer and a star in the making. But we felt like that was the best story. So, like with any death you arrive at it, you debate it, and if it’s right, that’s what you have to do.

Agents Of SHIELD

Jeff Bell says that the next few episodes will deal with connecting the show to the opening of Age of Ultron:

The next two episodes, beginning Tuesday (9 ET/PT), will have Easter eggs, plot threads and other connective tissue leading into the opening scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters May 1.

Ultron co-star Cobie Smulders reprises her role as former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill on the series, and the May 5 episode will bring the Avengers aftermath back to the small screen “for the five people who don’t see the movie that week,” says Bell.

[ USA Today]

And speaking to TV Guide, Bell says that the show will not switch its focus to powered characters like the Inhumans:

“That’s not really who or what this show is,” Bell tells “Inhumans are very much a part of the Marvel Universe. We’re also a TV show, not the movies. [Powers] will certainly be an ongoing texture to our show, but I think it’s more about the individual characters we meet rather than we’re just going to jump both feet into the Inhuman world.”

Brian Michael Bendis talks about the potential for more episodes:

We’re hearing very positive things. As soon as that is official, I will not shut up about it. That I promise. But those who need to make those decisions are doing so right now — even as we speak. Someone who works on the show has worked on other shows, and he pointed out that there’s a point where no one speaks to you — like you’ve died — if the show’s not doing well. But we can tell from the enthusiasm from PlayStation and Sony that they’re very happy with the results that they got from us. We got them a show that’s different from anything else that’s on the air, and even the hardcore gamers are like, “Oh, cool, free show!”
