The Sight of Chris Hemsworth's Body Convinced John Krasinski Not to Be Captain America

It’s hard to imagine after years of Chris Evans in the role that John Krasinski was at one point incredibly close to becoming Marvel Studio’s Captain America. Krasinski dropped out at pretty much the final hurdle, but according to him, the reason he knew he wouldn’t get it? Chris Hemsworth’s abs.

Speaking on Conan last night, Krasinski recalled his time in the running to become Steve Rogers, telling the audience about him trying on the costume and getting to screen test ... and then the exact moment he realized that it wasn’t meant to be:

I was putting on the suit just watching it, and like, this is so amazing. And I got about right to my waist, I was still shirtless and feeling pretty good about myself—wasn’t 13 Hours yet but felt pretty good. All of a sudden Chris Hemsworth walked by as Thor and went ‘hey mate’, and I went ‘I’m good. This is stupid, I shouldn’t—It’s okay, I’m not going to be Captain America, it’s fine.’

Oh dear.

To be fair, there’s not many people on the planet who wouldn’t be intimidated by the thought of their physique being compared with Chris Hemsworth’s. And given Marvel’s penchant for topless scenes with its male actors, maybe Krasinski was right to be concerned, even jokingly! But alas, it was never meant to be, and instead we got this:

Sorry John. You win some, you lose some.

The links in this article are great. The article that “broke” the news that Chris Evans could be cast as Cap is AMAZING in retrospect. “Chris Evans as Cap? Yeah, we could see it.”

Or the comments claiming that Evans already had his chance at an iconic role, that he would be too “spazzy”, that he he “weaksauce chest hair”, others claiming it would be too jarring to have him play both the Human Torch and Cap, and someone saying that portraying Cap without blonde hair would be a terrible idea.

But my favorite comment of all... well, my favorite comment from this 6 year old article is claiming Neal McDonough would be the perfect Captain America. Now, that’s not to say he wouldn’t have been a good Cap... I’m just perfectly content in our reality where Evans got the role and McDonough was simply a very good Dum Dum.

EDIT: This would honestly make a great idea for some retrospective posts: dig up old io9 articles that talk about possible casting rumors that turn out to be true later, just to see how the community reacted (especially to “bad ideas” that turned out to be amazing choices, a la Chris Evans as Cap.)
