This both is and isn’t a surprise: Luc Besson is still working on a sequel to 2014's Lucy, and has written the script for it.

The news comes buried in a shareholder meeting reported on by Variety, with the salient details picked up by Screen Rant. In it, the CEO of EuropaCorp, Besson’s film studio, Marc Shmuger, reports that the movie remains in active development and has a script courtesy of Besson himself.

On the one hand, this isn’t surprising, in that the film made a lot of money, especially internationally, and it got pretty positive reviews despite that whole “using more than ten percent of your brain” thing not making any sense in the slightest.

But I’m a bit surprised simply because the original, which starred Scarlett Johansson as the eponymous Lucy, who gains super thinking powers after a weird run in with some superdrugs, didn’t leave much room in its ending for a sequel.

No word yet on Scarlet Johansson’s return, or when the film will be put into production. What we do know, however, is that after the relative commercial failure of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, EuropaCorp is adjusting its production strategy. During the call, Shmuger emphasized efforts to fast track thrillers and action movies like Lucy 2 in an effort to recoup its losses, which last fiscal year totaled $135 million.
