So that happened. After years of intense secrecy around Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the latest trailer went from 0 to 100 in terms of spoilers. Not only did the trailer show the reveal of Wonder Woman, but it even introduced the film’s big bad guy: Doomsday. Here’s what we learned.
Wait, is that a thin Clark Kent-look alike on the cover of the Gotham Free Press? Or that skinny criminal Batman tied up in the SDCC trailer? That’s weird. Anyway, we get a bit of a sense of the difference between how Gotham approaches Batman (the branding does seem a bit extreme) and how Metropolis approaches Superman, who appears to be a literal Christ-figure:
“I have a bad history with freaks dressed like clowns,” says Bruce Wayne as the above image is shown. If you had any doubts it was from the Joker, well, now you don’t—and it might be why Batman is chasing down the Joker and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. But what effect did that have on him? Did he retire?
“Wow that is a good grip! You should not pick a fight with this person.” Lex Luthor introduces Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent. Plus, if you were wondering what it would look like if Lex decided his inspiration was the Joker, this is pretty close. Jesse Eisenberg’s performance appears to be very upbeat and manic.
We get a better look at the geography of the Batcave which, apparently, has a water component. A sewer, perhaps? Teenage Mutant Ninja Batman? That also appears to be the Robin suit from earlier on the right.
Anyway, say hi and bye to Alfred (Jeremy Irons). “You’re going to go to war?” he asks.
“That son of a bitch brought the war to us,” says Bruce in his best Christian Bale voice. Here’s a flashback to Man of Steel, which kind of explains Bruce’s anti-Supes feeling.
Batman is breathing heavy, but looking awesome.
“The greatest gladiator match in the history world,” says Lex over images of the Batwing flying at Superman, and vice verse.
“The son of Krypton versus the Bat of Gotham.” Oh, silly Batman, bullets don’t hurt Superman.
“It’s time you learned what it means to be a man,” Batman says to Superman over a few images we’ve already seen followed by this insane one. Given the outfit, this looks like it’s the fight that leads into the clip we saw in the teaser earlier this week. Where do the flying bug people come from? Bruce’s fevered imagination, maybe? Is this a Batman dream, flashback, or the moment he himself learned to be a man?
Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves, a loyal employee of Mr. Luthor. “Man won’t kill God,”say Lex.
Confirmation of the rumor that Lex is doing experiments with Zod’s body, which he got somehow.
“The Devil will do it.” Something that goes horribly wrong, with Lex in the Frankenstein role with Zod. What is this pod thing? You’re about to find out.
“What have you done?” asks Superman. The result appears to be Doomsday, the long-time Superman villain who infamously killed Superman in the comics. Here he targets Batman. Good thing Wonder Woman shows up.
“Is she with you?” “I thought she was with you.”
