Welcome to the monthly meeting of the io9 Book Club. In June, we read The Memory Garden by Mary Rickert. Jump into comments to get started talking about it!

For those unfamiliar with the io9 book club, here's how it works: You read the book. We create a special book club post on io9 when the meeting is in session. That would be the post you're reading. Then everybody talks about the book in comments for a few days, starting right now.

We hope that Mary Rickert will join us sometime in the next week to talk about the book. So, what did you think of The Memory Garden?

Want to get started on our next book?

In July, we'll be reading The Girl with All the Gifts, by M.R. Carey (we reviewed it here ). We'll meet on August 5 to discuss it, and we hope Carey can join us to discuss it later that week.

The thing that really got me about this book was how suspenseful it is, without any manufacured tension. It's a book in which not that much "happens," and yet I was on the edge of my seat because of little touches that show Nan's perception of reality slipping and paranoia encroaching on her world little by little. You get this creeping sense that something terrible is going to happen... and yet, I didn't feel cheated at all that it doesn't ever materialize. The book felt like it paid off perfectly, with Nan threading the needle of introducing Bay to this weird world of magic and unburdening herself of her terrible secrets.
