Welcome to the monthly meeting of the io9 Book Club. In March, we read Jeff VanderMeer's Annihilation. Jump into comments to get started talking about it!

For those unfamiliar with the io9 book club, here's how it works: You read the book. We create a special book club post on io9 when the meeting is in session. That would be the post you're reading. Then everybody talks about the book in comments for a few days, starting right now.

VanderMeer will join us to talk about the book early next week. So, what did you think of Annihilation?

Want to get started on our next book?

In April, we'll be reading Kate Atkinson's Life After Life. We'll meet on May 6 to discuss it!

I considered reading the book, but I saw all the reviews on Amazon (not a majority, to be sure) that described it as rambling, without character development, with only unlikeable characters, and with seemingly arbitrary plot developments. In addition, there were a handful of reviews saying something similar to "it seemed like just the first set of chapters from a longer book rather than the first book in a trilogy."

Everybody here seems to have loved the book, however. Any direct responses to these charges? Thanks.
