What goes into making R2-D2? In the Star Wars universe, it’s a bunch of fictional technological bits and bobs. In ours, it’s usually a bit of electronics and Kenny Baker. But if you’re making an R/C R2? it takes a hell of a lot of technical wizardry, as this video about the R2-D2 Builders Club shows.
Norman Chan of Tested recently interviewed R2 builder Chris James at Maker Faire 2015 about getting into building fully functional replicas of Star Wars’ loveable astromech. There’s a lot of interesting stuff in the video, especially as you get to have a good look inside at all the wonderful bits of tech that go into making the droid move around, light up and use different features. It might not look like it from the outside, but there’s a serious amount of hard work and wiring that goes into building an R2-D2.
Lets hope the talented folks of the R2 Builders Club (some of whom actually worked on making the droid again for The Force Awakens) produce some pretty awesome BB-8’s by the time Episode VII ) produce some pretty awesome BB-8’s by the time Episode VII is out later this year as well. They’ve certainly got building R2-D2’s down to a fine art!
