Just when it was getting good, Syfy yanks the plug on Stargate Universe. Sad, but true. Even more troubling, does this mean the end of the very long Stargate franchise?

Syfy twittered this announcement today:

Announcement today: Syfy will end its original action-adventure series Stargate Universe when the show returns with the final 10 episodes of its second season in the Spring of 2011. The Stargate franchise — consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis. and Stargate Universe — has aired on Syfy since 2002. Syfy has a slate of new scripted projects lined up for 2011 including the series premiere of Being Human on January 17, the recently green lit one-hour drama series Alphas and the much anticipated, Battlestar prequel pilot movie, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Warehouse 13, Eureka & Haven will also return w/new seasons next year

In truth, we're sad to see SGU go. The second season was truly just starting to get good. No longer afraid, SGU coldly killed off characters and infected the adorable imp Chloe with some sort of alien disease. People had fever dreams, and new alien friendships were formed. We were finally feeling a connection with the crew of the Destiny (and we should also mention that the FX in this series were absolutely delightful).

Alas, the remaining 10 episodes from the second season will be the last for SGU. But does that mean no more Stargate as a whole? From the sound of the announcement Syfy doesn't seem committed to being the home for Stargate. That's...troubling. This franchise has provided them with original material for years and years. We hope they don't turn their backs on Stargate just yet. In fact, ahem, we just so happen to have the perfect idea to Keep The Gate Alive! What about a McKay and Eli spinoff series that sometimes overlaps with Warehouse 13 and Eureka? David Blue's Eli was by far the best thing that came out of SGU, and we're not ready to give him up! Think about the amazing nerd banter and algorithm squabbling possibilities! Come on Syfy, you've got a winner with these two!

All this brilliant spin-off needs now is a name, io9ers I leave this in your hands. Let's make lemonade out of space lemons!
