We’re on the road this week, sans computer. In place of the Sunday Puzzle column, I thought I’d turn you on to Futility Closet, and some lateral thinking puzzles recently featured on its podcast.

What is Futility Closet? A lot of things, really—but if you like io9, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy much of what FC has to offer. There’s the podcast component, which is hosted at Boing Boing; but it’s also a long-running blog, which creator Greg Ross calls “a collection of entertaining curiosities in history, literature, language, art, philosophy, and mathematics, designed to help you waste time as enjoyably as possible.” (Choice entries from this growing database of interestingness have been collected into two books.) Not surprisingly, it often features puzzles, as well. The lateral thinking puzzles, which you can listen to here, are of a slightly different genus than those commonly featured in the Sunday Puzzle column and were, for me, a welcome change of pace. Give them a shot, then spend some time perusing Futility Closet’s extensive puzzle archive.
