The classic broken-down Lady Liberty that has a cameo at the end of the original Planet of the Apes movie actually had a planned appearance in the apes movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It was cut, but you can see what they had planned in this amazing concept art.

Artist Brian Cunningham spoke to Film Sketchr and revealed this amazing cut ending which featured an older, tattooed Caesar looking out at a burning Manhattan from this perch inside the Statue of Liberty. In an interview, Cunningham, who is a professional concept artist and allegedly made these images for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, explained what was happening. First you see Caesar going up a mysterious staircase. There's a close up of his tattooed face, and then...

"pull back to reveal he's observing Manhattan on fire from the back of a badly damaged Statue of Liberty..... a nod the the Charlton Heston scene from the original."

Amazing! We kind of wish Rupert Wyatt kept this idea, but at the same time we love the new franchise so much that we trust that Dawn director Matt Reeves has good things planned for the all-out ape war that is about to ensue. And here's a look at the original Planet of the Apes scene with Lady Liberty, destroyed.
