Way back when, James Gunn filmed a bunch of Stan Lee cameos in a row for not only his Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but three other films as well. One of the cameos Gunn filmed popped up in Doctor Strange, but it wasn’t the only option on the table.
In Doctor Strange, as Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) battle it out, Strange and Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) slam into the side of a bus where Lee laughs while reading The Doors of Perception.
As is his wont, Gunn took to Facebook to share some stories from the set. This time, he shared a couple of other takes on the Strange cameo:
On his list is “Stan throwing his head back and laughing as hard as he can, yelling, ‘I’m laughing for no reason! I’m totally crazy!’” which creeps me the hell out. On the other hand, it would not make my top five of bizarrely disturbing public transportation encounters, so maybe it’s not that bad.
Gunn also said that his favorite, which was the original pick for the movie and cut for time reasons, was “Stan laughing hysterically at a Garfield book, hooting, ‘He HATES Mondays but he LOVES lasagna!’”
A commenter on the post pointed out that this joke is similar to one from Rick and Morty, whose co-creator, Dan Harmon, wrote a few scenes for Doctor Strange. “I guess Dan Harmon forgot he had used it and that’s why it was cut out,” continued the commenter.
“Well I’m the one who came up with it and I don’t know the Rick and Morty joke, so there you go. But Dan and I have a lot of things in common so it doesn’t surprise me we’d come up with the same joke,” Gunn responded.
Of the three options—other than just the laughter used—I think the excelsior one is probably the best. More importantly, this hints that there could be a giant pile of unused Stan Lee cameos lying around. Soon, Marvel will have enough to release an entire movie of them.
