SpongeBob SquarePants Wants You to Please Give Plankton Their Due

For World Oceans Day yesterday, the BBC and Nickelodeon teamed up to produce this video featuring the Spongebob Squarepants character Plankton educating us on the organism plankton.

Basically, the video takes us all to task for our obsession with the large and cute and not the small and weird-looking. Plus, the video has mercifully little Spongebob and a lot more of the very angry Plankton, which is a wonderful choice.

Oddly, the stink phytoplankton help produce was not included in this video. Weird.

Great info, but wouldn’t be so quick to shit all over those “gigantic blowhards.” Whales actually help propagate and stimulate the growth of plankton by eating/taking nutrients at depth and rising and releasing giant “fecal plumes” that plankton feed on. They also, by plunging up and down, mix and elevate the plankton back up to surface waters where they can photosynthesize and extend their lifespan. The process is called “trophic cascade”:
