One of the most successful new supernatural horror franchises in recent memory is getting a fourth film. Universal Pictures just announced that Insidious: Chapter 4 is coming in October 2017 with a new director but a familiar star.
Leigh Whannell, who wrote and directed the previous three movies, will write part four but is handing off the director’s chair to newcomer Adam Robitel. Little is know about the story except that Lin Shaye will be back as parapsychologist Elise Rainier, who died in the first film, but has found her way back into subsequent films in various different ways.
For example, Insidious: Chapter 3 was a prequel that told a bit of how Shaye’s character began to learn about The Further, a terrifying place that exists between life and death. You’d assume that, if she’s back for Chapter 4, this film will also take place before the first movie (since it ended with her demise), and the second, which featured her as a spectral presence.
Then again, one of the things that has been the most fun about the Insidious franchise is how they’ve used the world of The Further to jump around time and characters. Really, with Chapter 4, anything is possible.
It’ll be released October 20, 2017.
