See How Daenerys' Dragons Come to Life in Game of Thrones' Emmy-Winning VFX

Okay, first things first: No, Game of Thrones’ fifth season almost certainly shouldn’t have won the award for Best Drama Series over Mad Men at last night’s Emmys. Second: Yes, this is another Game of Thrones VFX reel, and yes, Game of Thrones absolutely deserved to win its fourth Special Effects Emmy, as this video ably proves.

I don’t know what’s more impressive: The sheer number of layers that go into every aspect of the dragon’s flesh, the many insane apparatuses that the show constructs to give Emilia Clarke something to act against, or all the little details, like the subtle gore dripping from the dragons’ mouths after they feed. Maybe all of it?

Of course, if you guys just want to bitch about the Emmys in the comments, that’s fine too.

“Game of Thrones’s” victory reignites the recognition of fantasy as vehicle for legitimately great storytelling kicked off by “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” sweeping the 2003 Oscars.

And not just that. Tatiana Maslany being nominated for Best Actress in a sci-fi show, and Viola Davis’s victory. This Emmys is a watershed for genre and actresses and actors of color.
