Samira Wiley Has Joined the Cast of The Handmaid's Tale

We’ve not heard much about Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale, other than the fact that it exists and that Elisabeth Moss will play the lead role. But now we know that an Orange is the New Black star will be joining Moss as a fellow Handmaid.

Deadline reports that Wiley has joined the show as Moira, Offred’s friend from before she became a Handmaid, and fellow trainee at the Red Center. Moira acts as Offred’s connection to life before the dystopian society of Gilead, and a confidante in the bizarre world where society is ruled by religious fundamentalists and fertile women are treated as property.

The series, which was ordered straight to a run of 10 episodes, is set to enter production this fall ahead of a premiere on the streaming service next year.

I have this quasi-witty thing matching each 2016 primary candidate to a a pop culture dystopia: Donald Trump is Hunger Games (bombastic reality television and fake hair), Bernie Sanders is Divergent (I mean yeah it’s dystopian but it’s pretty redistributive at the start), Hillary Clinton is The Giver (the one that’s been around forever and also Taylor Swift is in the new version for some reason). But whenever I mentioned that Ted Cruz was Handmaid’s Tale, people looked at me blankly. I was kind of taken aback by how many liberal artsy people never read it.

Here’s hoping the show gives the book some positive exposure.
