Okay, not back to Back to the Future — he's signed on to direct a near-future underwater adventure called Dark Life. But, hey, it's Zemeckis and scifi — everybody wins.

The Oscar-winning director who's given us Back to the Future, Death Becomes Her, Contact, and Beowulf is planning to adapt Kat Falls' upcoming YA novel Dark Life — which posits a world where global warming and natural disaster has led to ocean levels rising, sinking decent chunks of the world as we know it. Some people have found a way to live under the water line — and some of the children of this new subaqua society have developed superpowers — and the story follows a Romeo and Juliet-ish couple who unravel a vast conspiracy.

It's unclear if this is going to be live action or another of Zemeckis' CG spectacles. Either way, it's good to see him leaving myth and folklore behind and diving into the real world again.
