Alien: Covenant 2/Prometheus 3

In conversation with the LA Times, Ridley Scott stated he’s considering a third Prometheus/Alien film set to reveal the secret origins of the derelict ship on LV-426— and why its cargo bay held thousands of Xenomorph eggs.

I still think there’s a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you’ll have to now re-evolve. What I always thought when I was making the first one [was] why would a creature like this be made and why was it traveling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question — who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think.

The Little People

Grabbers director Jon Wright is now attached to direct The Little People, a film described as “Gremlins meets Straw Dogs” for Cornerstore Films. Based on an original script by Wright and co-writer Mark Stay, the story concerns Londoners Maya and Jamie “escaping their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to discover malevolent, murderous goblins lurking in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. When heavily pregnant Maya’s relationship with a local family turns sour, who – or what – will come to her rescue and what extremes will she go to to protect her unborn child?”

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Producer Dan Wilson spoke to Vanity Fair about when he plans to resume filming Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Nobody wants to go into an environment that’s going to be risky and that goes for crew members too. It’s not just talent. It’s everybody involved on set. There’s a nervousness and that’s natural and understandable. In the plans that we’ve discussed, they’ve certainly taken that into account and we’ll see when we get there, I guess.

Legends of Tomorrow

TV Line has confirmed that Maisie Richardson-Sellers will no longer feature as a series regular in Legends of Tomorrow season six, after Charlie’s departure in the season finale.

Space Force

Speaking with Collider, co-creator Greg Daniels revealed Netflix has yet to commission a second season of Space Force.

We’re certainly hoping for a few more seasons. And we have started to assemble the senior writers to discuss what would happen next year. We don’t have the pickup yet, but yeah. There’s a lot to follow up on based on where we ended.

Stargirl

During a recent interview with TV Guide, Neil Jackson revealed The Icicle harbors feelings for Courtney’s mom, Barbara (Amy Smart).

She awakens feelings in him that he hadn’t felt since the death of his wife. His feelings start to get in the way of [his plans]. Is Icicle really poised to mack on Courtney’s mom? It looks like this growing feud with Stargirl will soon get personal.

In the same interview, Jackson admitted his character “sounds like a My Little Pony.”

I was like, ‘Well, is this a Nickelodeon show? He sounds like a My Little Pony. He doesn’t sound like a villain who instills fear in people. Then he pitched me the character and I got it straight away. These names are throw-overs from when comic books didn’t have the same sort of gravitas that we have with them now, and so you’ve got names like The Justice Society and Injustice Society and Icicle and Stripsey, and they’re all a little bit kitsch and silly and fun. Geoff’s brilliantly taken what could be ludicrous and turned it into something that’s very credible. With this last episode, Jordan proves himself to be a very, very, very powerful threat even though he’s got a silly name.

The problem with Alien Covenant, and by extension however Scott continues that story is that it plays the Alien story as Gothic Horror rather than Cosmic Horror.

I feel that, for a lot of people, the reason alien works so well is that it doesn’t need explanations. It posits that if you go out into space, you are entering the unknown, and the unknown can kill you. The humans have no conception of what they’ve stumbled upon, and unleash the Alien as a result. They have no idea what they’ve found, or why it is dangerous. They are helpless in the face of the void, and that void destroys them, leaving only one witness to tell the tale.

The metatext that the people who built that warship were destroyed by their own creation adds a sense of gothic gravitas to that story. However, it isn’t necessary for it to work. At its heart the fact that the Xenomorph might just be the forgotten weapon of a doomed civilisation, which it destroyed, doesn’t detract from the Cosmic Horror story. Rather it reinforces it. A single wrecked ship from the precursors, presumably a “common” thing out in space is all it takes to unleash hell for the humans, and completely upend their universe.

Prometheus has a lot of the imagery and aesthetics of Cosmic Horror, inviting its comparison to “At the Mountains of Madness”. However, by the time you get to Covenant its clear that its telling a story of gothic hubris rather than cosmic indiferance.

The Promethius of the title isn’t the Greek Titan who stole fire from the gods, inviting questions of what fate awaits humans for their transgressions against the enormity of the universe. Rather it is Mary Shelley’s “Modern Promethius”; Victor Frankenstein. The man who sought to create life in his own image, and was ultimately destroyed by his creation.

Covenant presents the story of the Alien as the latest stage in a cyclical narrative of hubris leading inevitably to destruction. In this story a precursor race creates a new being to serve it, but that being transcends them and in so doing begets its own creation. It becomes the modern promethius, and the god that gave it birth is the colateral damage that results from its attempts at expereimentation with forces it cannot truly control.

Thus the Engineers created humanity, which in turn created Androids. In the form of David those androids destroy the engineers. Then he in turn chooses to become the creator. He re-engineers the Alien, which will in turn spell the doom of his own creators; humanity.

This is no longer a cosmic horror story. It is not humanity suffering from the predation of an uncaring universe, which they can never truly understand. Instead they are suffering the consequences of the arrogance of one of their own in thinking he could create life. It’s a good story, but it’s a gothic story, and that’s not what Alien was originally about.

By making Humanity complicit in the existence of the Xenomorph it undermines the entire point of the original film. The Alien is no longer, truly alien.
