One of my measures of the quality of a television show is how well it holds up in reruns years later. Sure, the test of time is not appropriate for some stuff, particularly shows based on topical humor. But, for example, I find that BtVS holds up really well. I still enjoy the interplay between characters, the pop culture references, the witty dialog. It's still both funny and moving.

On the flip side, I have to change the channel when I run into a rerun of ST:TNG... and that's a show I never missed in first run. It's possible I'm just older, or TNG was more topical than I thought at the time, but it just seems painful now.

ST:TOS never fails to entertain. I think SG:SG1 is likely to work, but it's too soon to tell. SG:A already fails, I'm saddened to say.

I find I'm completely incapable of predicting what show will succeed and which will fail with this metric.
