Like a number of the other annual comic book conventions that’ve been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s New York Comic Con will be a digital-only event people can attend from the safety of their living rooms. According to con-organizer ReedPop, the NYCC x MCM Comic Con Metaverse going to be properly stacked with more than enough panels.
Following the first wave of programming announcements, ReedPop today shared that Metaverse—the catch-all name for this year’s event—is getting larger with an increased selection of livestreamed panels focusing on things ranging from classic animated TV shows like the 90's X-Men cartoon to dives into new Apple TV+ films like the werewolf-centric Wolfwalkers.
From October 8-11, the NYCC YouTube channel will begin airing panels for Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, a look back at the WB’s Smallville series, as well as looks at movies like the upcoming Love and Monsters, and Spontaneous, which focuses on a group of teenagers who all start spontaneously combusting.
In theme with NYCC’s typically more, well, comics-oriented fare in years past, Metaverse will also feature comic-centric spinouts for books like Locke & Key, and a discussion about The Adventure Zone graphic novels hosted by the McElroy family. All this is on top of the previously announced panels for the convention, including more looks at Hulu’s Marvel offerings like Helstrom and the MODOK animated series, panels for Lost’s anniversary, Doctor Who’s impending holiday return, and a blowout Star Trek Universe panel covering news from Lower Decks, Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds.
Very much like your regular comic-con, Metaverse appears as if it’s going to be dense to the point of being just shy of overwhelming, something that’s tended to be the case with all of this year’s digital cons where the brands have simply taken to dumping everything they’ve got online and letting everyone just consume it at their own pace. Hopefully, there’ll be a bit more structure to making this feel like a live “event” in comparison to something like SDCC’s virtual offering this year, which just dropped panels on Youtube as videos to flick through rather than trying to frame itself as a live series of panels.
Here are all the newly announced events.
