We've been hearing for months that the Imitation Game and Sherlock star, Benedict Cumberbatch, was in line to play the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel's big movie in 2016. But now it's really official. Marvel has announced that Cumberbatch will be playing the surgeon who suffers an accident and gains mystic powers.

The movie comes out Nov. 4, 2016, and Marvel's announcement specifically mentions that Strange is a neurosurgeon who suffers a "horrific car accident" and then "discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions." Just in case you thought they were changing it around.

Marvel's Kevin Feige is quoted as saying: "Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."

Cue the "OMG! THIS IS WHITEWASHING THOUGH I HAVE NEVER READ THE COMIC AND HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THIS CHARACTER'S BACKGROUND AND I HAVE NO IDEA THAT DR. STRANGE WAS INSPIRED BY VINCENT PRICE" tumblr outrage.

Meanwhile, as someone who has read Dr. Strange comics and knows his background, I still think Cumberbatch is miscast. But, hey, I could be wrong in the end. Cumberbatch can act. So, there is always hope.
