Is the New Power Rangers Movie Trying to Be Absurdly Gritty?

The villain of the Power Rangers reboot movie may have been revealed. This comes from an unconfirmed source, but if it’s true, it may indicate that the filmmakers may be trying to take the Mighty Morphin heroes to a darker place — and even if it’s not true, it’s hilarious.

So according to Heroic Hollywood, they have sources that tell them the movie’s main villain with be Rita Repulsa, which makes sense as she was the first villain featured on the original MMPR TV series, too. But it’s the unnamed source’s description of Rita that absolutely cracks me up:

“A huntress. A striking, yet subtly alien-looking woman. She carries a metallic staff topped with a distinctive crescent shape. Advances with a soldier’s confidence, guided by some sort of compass... Her staff is actually a device of immense power. She points it at the ground. Heads emerge, built layer upon layer like 3-D printing, made from the earth itself... The staff’s technology grants her the ability to create humanoid figures, soulless and robotic.”

Uh-huh. Truly, this serious, grounded take on the space witch Rita Repulsa is definitely what the character needs. I always thought that when she married Lord Zedd she danced with “a soldier’s confidence.”

There is a slightly less absurd tidbit about the movie, though — namely that Rita first attacks Earth during the Cretaceous period, which has its own Power Rangers, of course. And the Red Ranger a younger version of eventual Mighty Morphin mentor Zordon, who is described as follows:

“Though alien, he looks like a man in his 50s. Sinewy and strong, as if carved from some root that refused to die. A being of integrity and iron will.”

If you’re going to have there be Power Rangers during the Cretaceous period, at least have the Power Rangers be dinosaurs.
