Neil deGrasse Tyson's Cosmos Revival Is Finally Getting A Second Season

The 2014 Cosmos revival, A SpaceTime Odyssey, was a massive success, and now, finally, it’s getting the second season it deserves.

Executive produced by Seth MacFarlane and hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the Sagan-inspired science documentary series premiered in 2014 to become the most-watched series on National Geographic, with 135 million viewers worldwide on National Geographic and Fox.

Now, a second teaser is slated to premiere in 2019, titled Possible Worlds, with MacFarlane returning as EP and Tyson returning to host. Carl Sagan, whose imaginative and thoughtful original Cosmos series was the inspiration for the 2014 revival, is something of a patron saint of io9, so this is exciting news.

My apologies for not showing up earlier I didn’t know that a really good tv series would need comments that weren’t annoying.

1980's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage is magnificent television. One of my favourite episodes of it is the episode discussing how Sagan thinks we might be able to detect planets around distant stars. At the time that was all theoretical. 38 years ago there was no evidence that stars other than Sol had planets. This is the kind of thing I feel like stepping onto a soapbox at a busy intersection and proclaiming through a megaphone. Science is capable of making predictions of how to find things, then technology and mathematicians and engineers work to make devices to find those things, and then those things work. STEM works and it’s capable of making all of our lives better.

2014's Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey was a worthy successor to that kind of STEM education. The episode discussing how humans figured out that lead is artificially at elevated levels in modern society? That same kind of ‘detective’ work is how we know that modern levels of atmospheric CO2 are artificially elevated. We can point at ice cores and say “hey, this is where we started burning coal.” We created our own global geochemical signature. It said things that every child and adult in the 21st century should be aware of, and it’s redunculous that some people intentionally choose to not be aware of those things.
