After Peter Pan Live! and The Sound of Music Live, NBC is moving onward and upward, picking up the rights to The Wiz. This is a much more complicated musical than Peter Pan, so NBC, if you're going to do it, do it right. Cast Janelle Monáe.

We totally agree with Slate's earlier suggestion that Dorothy Gale must be played by singer, artist and io9 favorite Janelle Monáe. Diana Ross starred as Dorothy in the 1978 production (along with Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Nipsey Russell as the Tinman and Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion). The rest of the cast we'll give some wiggle room, but we'd really, truly love to see Monáe "ease on down the road."

Seriously, The Wiz is huge; the songs, dance numbers and sets alone are much bigger than anything NBC has taken on in their live musical productions so far. But if done right... it would be very, very, very fun.

Then again, it may not even happen. According to EW, NBC has optioned the rights to The Music Man, The Wiz and the 1975 version of The Wizard of Oz. NBC could potentially make any of these productions into their live show. Or even do multiple productions. If I had to put money on it, I could see them pushing out Music Man first. But personally, I'd really like to see them tackle The Wiz as well.
