Mount Rushmore Gets a Virtual Backup — In Case It's Ever Destroyed

If invading Martians or raging Kryptonians ever destroy the faces of Mount Rushmore, at least we'll have a backup to work from. A team of Scottish scientists are teaming up with the American company CyArk to create a 3D model of the monument, which CyArk claims will be accurate within 3mm, in case archeologists ever need to repair it. CyArk plans to archive 3D models of over 500 sites, identifying some as particularly at risk due to excessive tourism and pollution. [Guardian via Reddit]

Call me kooky but I feel like if a huge monument gets destroyed for whatever reason... we'll have bigger fish to fry and spend the boatload of money on then re-building it.
