Mortal Instruments is like the sexy Harry Potter who kills with swords and hangs out at horrible clubs

We're really not sure what to make of the new YA movie adaptation Mortal Instruments. On one hand, it's got an interesting premise. On the other hand, if we see another movie or book about an underground magic world with a chosen one kid who will save us all, we may stab our eyes out with forks.

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is based off the YA series by Cassandra Clare. Here's the official movie synopsis:

In the series’ first book, the #1 New York Times bestseller “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hits theaters on August 23rd, 2013.

I'm actually really excited for this movie. I loved the series as a quick read...I think Clare is quite witty (yes, yes when she's not plagiarizing someone, heard it) and I LOL'd several times reading these. Also, to be fair, this is really about two kids (and their friends) saving the world, not just one. Her world building is really good, though she calls St. Mark's in NYC the Lower East Side, which offends my East Village sensibilities.

Also, Simon Gao is just insanely hot. Mmm...Magnus Bane.
