Minimalist book cover art brings a new spark to these book classics

Even if you're tired of the "minimalist art" fad, these book covers are worth celebrating. For one thing, writer and graphic designer Nicolas Beaujouan has picked many of the greatest classics of science fiction and fantasy to illustrate anew. For another, there are some very clever choices here.

Beaujouan chose 23 classic books for his "Ultimate Geek Selection," which is sadly pretty heavily weighted towards male authors. But the results are still really eye-catching, and like the best minimalist art, these attempts to boil a complex story down to a single image might make you rethink the works they're illustrating. Check out some of our favorites below, and more at the links. [Geek-Art via The Mary Sue]

I'm a graphic designer and I've done some experiments with minimalism, mainly during periods of boredom. Not insanely minimalistic like the ones in the article, but still minimalistic enough, I guess. Anyways, I just did these for practice.

(Went for a 1960s book cover idea for it. I grabbed the design of Smaug from Tolkien's drawings, so its technically a photomanipulation)

(Yeah, that's a map of the Pacific Ocean in the visor. I'm so clever. Har Har Har.)

(You may have to lighten your monitor to see this one)

I've also done some work that's not quite minimalistic due to them mostly being made with pictures and photomanips, though I did put some minimalistic touches in them.

(My interpretation of old Luke Skywalker. Mark Hamill's face with Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan beard and cloak. The matte painting of Tatooine is in the "VII")
