Maybe Matt Reeves Won't Direct The Batman After All

The drama behind the scenes of the latest Batman movie is worthy of a whole movie all its own. The latest news is that negotiations with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves, which were reportedly going well last week, have broken down, leaving the production without a leader once again.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news. And despite its report, it does say the relationship isn’t irreparable. Reeves and Warner Bros. could still come to terms in the future. However, at the moment, he is not directing the movie.

It’s probably a good time to remember that in the initial report of Reeves being courted, apparently Fede Alvarez and Ridley Freakin’ Scott were also being considered. Whether Warner Bros. begins actively pursuing either of them, or goes back to the drawing board, is unclear.

This all started when Ben Affleck decided he didn’t want to direct the film—his reasoning being that the demands of playing Batman were too much and he just wanted to concentrate on that. Speculation, however, is that he was trying to distance himself from a production he wasn’t confident in, to a point where rumors even swirled that he was considering not being a part of it entirely and that the script would get a complete rewrite.

Here’s an idea: let’s make the movie about the making of this movie. Then at least you have a compelling narrative with Batman as the lead character.

We will, of course, keep our eyes on this story.

With The Flash and The Batman hemorrhaging directors, it seems there is something mighty wrong at WB. With repeated (but unsubstantiated) rumours that Wonder Woman is a mess (which makes me sad) and with Snyder directing Justice League*, are we eventually going to have start pinning our hopes on... Aquaman saving the DCEU?

* To clarify: I want Justice League to be good. But with BvS I was so bloody let down that any goodwill Snyder had has been well and truly drained.
