Marvel is no stranger when it comes to the world of big comic events, but this is a first for them: Their new Star Wars comics line will be getting an event series of its own this September, telling the tale of what happened to the Rebels after the end of Return of the Jedi.

No other details for Shattered Empire have been revealed other than a September release date, as well as the confirmation that the series will fly under the banner of the "Journey To The Force Awakens" initiative that was announced earlier this week — a set of 20 novels designed to map out the 30 years between Episodes VI and VII. Check out the full cover below:

Judging by the fact that this is pretty much the last shot of Return of the Jedi, it seems like Marvel will get the honor of revealing the new canonical version of what happened to Han, Luke, Leia and the rest of the gang immediately after the destruction of the second Death Star, similar to how their current Princess Leia standalone shows what happens immediately after the end of A New Hope.

This doesn't change the fact that it seems like Disney and Lucasfilm are pumping out an awful lot of new, supposedly all-canonical material in such a short period of time to try and infodump as much as they can ahead of the new movie, but at least Marvel gets the relatively easy job of being able to show the immediate continuation of Star Wars, rather than having to jump into that still-nebulous 30 year time period.

Let's hope it's interesting! Only another six months before we find out.
