We’ve been writing about Kubo and the Two Strings since we first realized it existed. Since then, with each subsequent look, the stop-motion animated film from the people behind Coraline and Paranorman looks more and more amazing. The latest trailer is no exception.

In fact, this trailer makes Kubo look like a fantasy adventure on the scale of Lord of the Rings, just with stop-motion animation and based on an original story:

This movie has it all: an incredible cast, beautiful visuals, fighting origami, samurais, dragons, magic guitars, impressive archery, humor, action—we could go on and on. Instead, we’re going to try to patiently wait for Kubo’s release on August 19.

It looks beautiful, but I’m not super sold on the cast. Matthew McConaughey, in particular, seems ill-suited to the role. Other than raising his voice a bit, his inflection sounds pretty much the same, regardless of the line. The funny bits especially fell flat for me.

Look, in the current climate someone has to this: There are a lot of white people voicing this movie (where the main characters are concerned at least). George Takei is the only Asian listed in the trailer and the only other Asian actor that has a character credited so far on IMDB (I know, I know - but the official site doesn’t seem to have a cast list - or it’s just well hidden) is the great Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. The rest of the Asian cast is listed as ‘voice’ or ‘voices’. Yes, this is an original story, but it appears to lift from a pretty specific culture.

I know this is a subject a lot of people are tired of seeing brought up, but sometimes I can’t stop myself. I expect this will undo any goodwill that the Spider-Man image bought me. :D
