The next bit of heartburn-inducing Akira news has leaked all over the internet. Keanu Reeves is rumored to be tapped for the role of Kaneda. But we're doubtful that casting Neo can appease people's concerns about whitewashing.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that,

"Reeves has held talks with the studio, with whom he already made the massively successful Matrix movies, for the part of Kaneda, the gang leader. Reeves doesn't yet have an offer for the role, but we hear the talks with his reps have been going well."

While we like ourselves some Keanu, if they cast this particular actor, not only will they be changing up the nationality of the cast, but they'll be adding a few years onto the characters as well. Granted, there are many translations of Katsuhiro Otomo‘s original work (but the younger versions are generally regarded as the favorite). That being said, Keanu loves there's always that? At least they're done talking about casting Zac Efron.

If that script over at Cracked is real, or at least in part, then it doesn't really matter who they choose for whatever part.

It's a completely different story with the title Akira on it. They should call it Bob or whatever.

'Tis a sad day indeed.
