HOLD UP. Is Hollywood actually planning a genre movie that's not a sequel or reboot? Signs point to yes, since Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams are set to star in scifi drama Story of Your Life, an adaptation of a Nebula Award-winning Ted Chiang short story. Denis Villeneuve will direct.

The Hollywood Reporter has the dish on the film that'll reunite the American Hustle co-stars:

The story is set in motion when alien crafts land around the world, and an expert linguist, to be played by Adams, is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. As she learns to communicate with the aliens, she begins experiencing vivid flashbacks that become the key to unlocking the greater mystery about the true purpose of their visit.

Renner will play a physics professor paired by the government with the linguist to help communicate with the aliens.

The script was penned by Eric Heisserer, whose previous credits fall firmly into that reboot-and-sequel camp (the 21st century versions of The Thing and A Nightmare on Elm Street, plus Final Destination 5). According to the Hollywood Reporter, Story of Your Life will begin filming after Renner completes his next Avengers-related shoot (that'd be Captain America: Civil War) this spring.

It's still not an original story so I wouldn't go nuts over that, what I would, though, is that they are making a scifi film where the two lead characters are a scientist and a linguist, and a female linguist at that, rather than men with guns.
