Is J.J. Abrams planning a secret Steven Spielberg collaboration? Abrams is attempting to squeeze the awesomeness out of Speilberg's classic hits and turn them into one tribute film. But unlike James Cameron, Abrams wants to do it on the cheap.

Vulture has the exclusive information about J.J. Abrams' next project as a director — which could mean that he won't direct the next Star Trek, or it'll be delayed slightly.

(Abrams is also creating a new NBC series about spies, and producing MI:4.)

This new film project is both a collaboration with Spielberg, and a tribute to Spielberg's early 1970s and 1980s films, and Abrams intends to write the script himself. Vulture reports that while there are little to no details about the project:

Like Spielberg's Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and E.T., the project will deal with everyday people whose personal relationships are tested when they are thrown up against extraordinarily fantastic - and possibly other-worldly - events.

So basically all of Spielberg's films in the 70s and 80s, not to mention Abrams' own Cloverfield. Abrams has said in countless interviews that Jaws is his all time favorite film, so we're guessing he may pull heavily from that movie.

Abrams is in talks with Spielberg, who should be involved in some form or another. Plus in typical Abrams style, the title is being kept hush hush. But what we're most interested in is this quote:

"It's kind of the anti-Avatar," explained one source, "Not that [J.J.] doesn't love that movie or special effects movies - he has a real facility for effects. But he really wants to make this, and the way to do that is to be fiscally responsible."
